Courses - We have paused our courses while we focus on field trips.

We're still happy to offer a wide range of things to organised groups.

All courses are aimed at beginners, improvers or as a refresher for those experienced.  We offer lots of information around each species as well as the full identification features so you can take in the right level of information for you.  It is also an opportunity to meet like minded people and discover new places to enjoy.  Speckled Wood Wildlife have 40+ years experience in watching & observing wildlife, as well as 20+ years experience in teaching. We offer a high quality learning experience with the aim of promoting the awareness and enjoyment of the nature on your doorstep, your local area and further afield.

 

Courses are delivered in a friendly and informal way with the chance to ask questions throughout. We proudly share our extensive photo and video library and keep delivery lively and interesting, with discussion at the start &  finish.  See our TESTIMONIALS. Our course WhatsApp groups give you the opportunity to share your sightings/ questions and interact with others on the course, plus we share plenty of additional information, photos and articles too.

For all courses;

  • All zoom sessions start at 7pm and run until 8pm plus time for discussion.

  • Field trips do not include transport, food (or accomondation if applicable).  Car sharing can be facilitated plus free lifts are available from Pontypool (NP4 6RR)

  • Field trips are run on Saturdays but please the Sunday free too incase of adverse weather. We reserve the right to re-arrange trips if weather is prohibitive (please see section 5 of our T&Cs).

  • We generally meet for field trips between 9am and 10am, but this can be affected by tide times.

  • All trips are fully risk assessed and insured.

  • Zoom sessions are recorded and you'll recieve a link to that recording for your future use.

  • We offer GIFT VOUCHERS and PAY LATER (or in installments).  Feel free to contact us.

Spring Butterflies -  £225

Starts 7pm Weds 22nd March 23 - 4 weekly zoom sessions and 3 field trips - Learn the basics of butterfly identification and butterfly groups, species that over-winter and those that are first to emerge. Details of species and ecology of all species emerging up until the end of May will be covered, as well as a session to support the field trips covering habitat, species ecology and where to look. The field trips will give you first hand experience of many of these species by visiting the rich habitats of Ewylas Harold, Herefordshire on Sat 6th May for the stunning Pearl-bordered Fritillary and other common Spring butterflies,
Merthyr Mawr, Bridgend on Sat 13th May for Grizzled and Dingy Skipper, Common Blue and Brown Argus and other species typical in May, and finally Rodborough Common, Stroud on Sat 20th May to look for Duke of Burgundy and Green Hairstreak, maybe early Adonis and Small Blue.

Number of Sessions: 4 x 1 hour Zoom Sessions, 7pm to 8pm plus up to 30 mins discussion

Number of Field Trips: 3 x full day field trips

Zoom Sessions Start: 7pm Wednesday 22nd March 2023 (not weekly, avoids Easter)

Zoom Session Continue: 7pm Weds 12th April, Weds 19th April, Weds 3rd May 2023.

Field Trip Dates: Saturday 6th May, Saturday 13th May, and Saturday 20th May 2023.

Field Trip Locations: Ewylas Harold (Herefordshire border), Merthyr Mawr (Bridgend) and Rodborough Common (Stroud) meeting at around 10am
